Music ——————— 1. Song: Embalmed – Artist: Autopsy – 2. Song: Okkusenman – Artist: Nemx28 – ————————————- The question is asked time after time. I thought I’d demonstrate via video, why oil based clay is predominant over water based clay. Water based clay’s use isn’t necessarily limited to clay walls as WED clay is used by many professional mask makers. However, your average hobby shop water based clay isn’t going to cut it. It’s consistency is difficult to work with and it cracks if you don’t constantly apply water to it. Oil based clay, on the other hand, provides a much longer working time, ultimately extending to years. I have had the same oil based clay for at least a year and I’ve had absolutely no problems with it. I use Chavant’s “Professional Plasteline.” I will put a link below indicating where you can obtain this stuff. It’s relatively hard a first, but the consistency eases up at room temperature. www.creativecoldsnow.com Hopefully I have cleared up the difference between Water based clay and Oil based clay. Don’t make the same mistakes I did! Save your money! Haha! ——————— Alienation: I will be casting him soon, I found out awhile back that I ran out of ultracal-30 so I have to buy some more, but Clay Planet has been out for awhile now. I don’t know anywhere else in my area to get the stuff, so I’ll have to camp it out until then. In the mean time, I’ll start sculpting “The Mannequin”. I did start sculpting …

How do I make oil based clay hard enough for me to scrap it with something sharp? I like oil based clay, but it’s really difficult to make it smooth.
@kingtooty3moor Hey-o. Oh not a problem; I hold no grudges. Thanks man! Appreciate it! Oh right on; another mask maker! We need a hell of lot more of them on Youtube! Can’t wait to see your work man!
@ShadowMakerOfMasks Hey, dude im really sorry about that comment but i swear it wasn’t me i saw your work and i liked it .and by the way i will make a video of my work and show it to you hope you will like it
@kingtooty3moor Sup. Well, if you’re going to insult me, you could at least check your spelling so you could come off as an intelligent human being. Oh well! Too late for that. You are right, I don’t know too much about clay. I am cognizant of the fact that many people use water based clay. This video was more so my subjective opinion than anything else. Aye, I’m a geek. Who gives a shit? My sculpting, Shitty? What credibility do you have, asshat? Show me better and I’ll eat my words.
@JigSawJoe1028 Oh, I know. I guess I just didn’t want to deal with the hassle. It’s unfortunate because I based this video more off on my impatience with water based clay as opposed to mentioning the facts about it. Ah well. I do hear WED clay is some good stuff! I’ll have to snatch some real soon!
You bet! Rock on!
@jasonlives1028 Aye, I do. I was just accentuating how much more versatile I believe oil based clay to be. Of course, it’s completely subjective and I base my opinion off of experience. In the past I covered a water based sculpt of mine in wet paper towels and the next day, well, it wasn’t what I would call “Workable.” In any case, I am a noob when it comes to clay and all of the different kinds, so I’m not completely ignorant as to say Oil Based clay is the only way to go.
Water clay is significantly cheaper, but dries out IF NOT COVERED! You need to cover the entire sculpture so that no air gets in when you’re not working.
Oil clay has it’s advantages (melt/pourable into molds, easier to detail, doesn’t need cover), but also has disadvantages (difficult to smoothen, EXPENSIVE, hard).
Water based has advantages: easy to get forms down fast, easily to smooth, VERY LOW COST!). I’d highly recommend using WED clay, just cover it!
Oh yeah… AUTOPSY RULES!
@ShadowMakerOfMasks Yeah, my water based clay takes too long to dry. In the package it says it dries 2mm each 24 hours, so it’s great when we are doing big and difficult projects, that’s why i chose it. You should try it, trust me you’ll like. May be the manufacturers that provide us the stuff here in spain dont ship it over the world, but i tell u the name just in case you can find it: Company: Jovi. They only work with water based clays, you could find terracota and white modeling clay
@Abstractmoves Hi there! Oh wow, you must have a four leafed clover under your house somewhere haha! Do you know what kind it is? I’ve heard of this stuff called “WED-Clay” and I hear it doesn’t dry out as fast as a regular water based clay. Maybe it’s the same stuff? Oil based clay is definitely awesome, however, I do like water based clay, specifically because it’s a hell of lot less tough haha!
Hi! I use water based clay to make all my sculpts and till the moment they’ve not craked out while drying. Maybe i’m lucky hahaha but it does resist quite well and it’s hard as rock once it’s done, i cannot complain nowadays, but i should try out that Oil based clay anyways.
@Deathrapnwest He’s in a better place now…
(Cue the sad violin music)
RIP tiny.
@Diminishedhardcore Done deal! Did one in pen, I think I added too much, so I’m making a new one in pencil. Hope to get it out to you soon!
~Shadow
Haha awsome!!! yeah dude just send me the finished drawing as soon as you can, im pumped to see / sculpt it!
@Diminishedhardcore It’s coming along fairly well! I’ve got an idea for a pretty cool mask, but it involves a tongue going through it’s eye sockets and I’m not entirely sure if that will be easy to cast. So until I can find out how to redesign it, I won’t be able to post it up. However, It’s going to happen! Sooner or later, haha!
~Shadow
Hahaha yeah i hat ethat stuff >.< oh hows that drawing coming together?
@Diminishedhardcore The brown oil based clay? Man that stuff is just about as hard as a rock! Haha! I use some of the bricks I have as doorstops! WED clay is good stuff? Right on. The Chavant clay is pretty good, much easier to work with if you heat it up just a tad. I totally recommend it. Thanks for sharing you experience with WED clay!
~Shadow
@mrcreepo Righteous. I’m going to have to head out and pick some up because I hear a lot of good things about it! Thanks for the facts!
~Shadow
@mrcreepo Oh right on! Thanks for the advice man! I may make a couple of a half masks out of the stuff in the future, and knowing that will sure be of help! Thanks again!
~Shadow
@Rockercdc Many thanks man! I think I’ve improved my editing skills quite a bit! Haha!
~Shadow
@deepwater909 Haha so we share the same hate for the stuff! Gave me a lot of trouble when I casted my newest mask. Damn the stuff! Haha!
~Shadow
I used to use monster makers oil based clay before i learned about WED-clay.
Then, i tried wed-clay and LOVED IT, i still use it to this day, i havent used that chavant clay you said to use, i still gotta try it out, i personally like to use soft clay, but yeah im going to buy the chavant clay, but yeah, invest in WED-clay, it will last a long time if you wet it everyday or every other day with a spray bottle and keep a bag over it to keep its moisture.
WED clay has glycerin in it to keep it from drying out fast. EM-217
Wrap your water based sculpture up in plastic next time. You can save the dried out sculpture by wrapping it in wet paper towels, then plastic.
